Dance with Cahaya!
Over the month of December, we conducted a 4-week long dance program with two of our kids. We were assisted by Beng Hwee (aka Beng aka Bboy Wavy), whom we met by sheer coincidence! Beng is currently a Masters student in Japan, but had previously studied in the US, where he was involved in many projects using dance as a tool for social change and community-building.
Having identified the passion for dance within these two kids, we decided to kickstart this dance program under our new SkillsPresent project, which is centred upon developing the unique strengths and interests of each child. Over four weeks, our kids embarked on an experiential journey and learned more about Hip Hop and dance footwork - although most of the time, our kids were the teachers, enthusiastically showing us dance moves they’ve learned on TikTok!
In these workshops, dance was used a medium for connection, interaction and self-expression. They were able to learn things on the spot, and then show us how to do it their way. For the kids, it was a great way to get active, unleash their creativity, grow in confidence, and take a step towards pursuing their passions.
